Pearl Harbour
WWll Beginning to End
USS Arizona Memorial
Battleship US Missouri
We are reminded of RESPECT, HONOUR, REMEMBRANCE.
In 1937, the US tried to stop the Japanese invasion of China but was unable to do so.
WWll broke out in Europe and the US was dragged into the conflict because of its involvement in the Pacific. An embargo on oil and iron was declared against Japan. The US moved its Pacific fleet from Sn Diego to Hawaii. The majority of the population in Hawaii at that time was Japanese. The US order was given for a surprise attack.
On February 1, 1933, the U.S. Navy staged a mock attack on the base at Pearl Harbour as part of a preparedness exercise. The attack "succeeded" and the defence was deemed a "failure".
The actual attack on Pearl Harbour by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941 brought the United States into World War II.
Sunday, December 7, 1941
Aircraft and midget submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy began an attack on the U.S naval base. The Americans had determined that an attack was likely to occur but failed to discover the target - it was believed that the Philippines was the most likely target. Under the command of Admiral Chuichi Nagumo, the attack was devastating in loss of life and damage to the U.S. fleet. At 06:05 on December 7, the six Japanese carriers launched a first wave of 183 aircraft composed mainly of dive bombers, horizontal bombers and fighters.
9 ships of the U.S. fleet were sunk and 21 ships were severely damaged. The death toll reached 2,400 and 1,282 were wounded. Of the military personnel lost at Pearl Harbor, 1,177 were from the Arizona. The first shots fired were from the destroyer Ward on a midget submarine that surfaced outside of Pearl Harbour. Ward sank the midget sub at approximately 06:55, about an hour before the attack on Pearl Harbour. Japan would lose 29 out of the 350 aircraft they attacked with.
A Gathering Storm tells of the conflict brewing in Asia between the two new rising powers - the US and Japan. It drives the US into the second world war conflict. |
